New firmware for the brave few who still use the N95-1

with one comment

I apologize for the lack of updates this past month. I’ve been very, very busy at work and it seems to have paid off. I was promoted to technology supervisor for my department with a nice pay increase to go with it. 🙂 I did also finally get my N95-3, but it wobbles just like the first one Mobile City Online sent me. They did send it in a sealed box, so I know at the very least that they did not sell me a phone that had been tampered with.

For all those who are still using the original N95, your day has finally come. Nokia today released one of the largest firmware updates I’ve ever seen on ANY device thus far, bringing a new breath of life to what almost was the forgotten N95.

The new firmware version (20.0.015) is currently for generic Euro firmwares only, but it should start to trickle down to the rest of the EURO and APAC versions as well very soon. Changes include the new Search application plugin on the active standby screen, faster camera startup time with a revamped menu, demand paging for faster menu navigation, application start up times, and 30mb of available RAM to go with it, some Ngage game previews, new folder icons, and access to the music store if you happen to live in the UK. By far the best part is the demand paging. Not only will everything open much faster, but the phone will also have better battery life to go with it because it will be using less resources. I can only imagine what kind of impact this will have on the upgraded N95 variants with the larger batteries and 80mb of available RAM.

I’ve also read that the keypress bug (part of the reason I sold my original N95-1 to begin with) has also been removed!

If you haven’t done so already, I highly recommend this update. The performance will be a night and day difference compared to the previous firmware.
