Signing Unsigned Applications-Newb Edition

with 5 comments

Symbian SignedI decided to compile a tutorial on how to sign unsigned applications for newbs. Most of the signing guides I’ve come across are either too complicated or they do not specify how to sign additional applications after a developer certificate has been obtained. The zip file below contains instructions (in .doc and .txt formats) as well as all the tools required to sign unsigned applications without getting too complicated.

As of now, Symbian Signed is still not accepting requests from developers whom do not have a Publisher ID, but hopefully this guide will lighten the load on their servers when they do make it public again so that it shouldn’t go down periodically anymore.

Download the zip file here: Signing Tools and feel free to email me with any questions (please don’t flood my inbox). 🙂

New S60 Touch Demo from MWC

leave a comment »

Engadget Mobile is of the opinion that S60 Touch isn’t as impressive as some other touch screen platforms, saying that it looks exactly like S60 as we all know it, but now you can touch it.

What did you expect?

All things considered, that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for; a nice big screen for plenty of finger gestures and watching videos, familiar UI with a couple added tweaks for the touch experience, backwards compatibility with standard S60v3 applications, and all of the open features I would expect from S60. The operating system is still the second easiest to use in the world (next to the fool-proof iPhone), so adding the element of touch to it shouldn’t be anything too dramatic at all. It will change the experience while keeping S60 familiar.

As a side note, while this looks great and all, Nokia still isn’t off the hook for not having a working demo at Mobile World Congress.

I’m skipping the N96…

with one comment

Nokia N96…and if you own one of the newer N95 variants, you should too. Here’s what you’ll be gaining for another $800.

  • Symbian S60v3 Feature Pack 2
  • A sexy black N81-like housing (though a fingerprint magnet)
  • DVB-H (which probably won’t work in your country)
  • A second LED for your 5mp camera
  • 16GB internal flash memory (with USB 2.0 transfer speeds, allegedly), microSD card slot
  • Hidden kickstand for watching video
  • Gaming keys added to the multimedia half of the slider

Now, here’s what you’ll be missing… Read the rest of this entry »

I’m tired of buttons.

S60 Touch DeviceBefore I continue, I just want to help my few readers understand what my blog is all about. I’m not a die-hard mobile phone news junkie as you’ll see a lot of on most other blogs. I titled my blog “Thoughts On S60” with the idea in mind that I wouldn’t be updating daily with every tiny piece of information leaked by Nokia or their competitors. Instead, I started this blog with the intentions of getting some larger ideas on paper to share with people and to post about anything that particularly sparked my attention about Nokia and S60 in the wireless industry. I’m certainly not trying to say that’s an excuse for updating so infrequently, but even if I were operating at maximum capacity, I still probably wouldn’t be posting on a daily basis. For the light amount of traffic that comes through here, I hope you enjoy the small bits I post and have yourselves a good read with an open mind.

Now for something completely different. I’m tired of buttons and the picture has to do with it. Keep reading (warning, rant).
