Nokia Launches the Ovi Store (mostly)

with one comment

I got a brief chance to play around with it today on the girlfriend’s N85. When I told her about it, the conversation went like this.

Me: Nokia launched the Ovi Store today.

Her: …why?

I laughed, but that seems to reflect the general consensus from all of the other S60 blogs today as well. I do admit, it’s significantly better than the previous alternative, Download!, but I think I speak for a lot of power users when I say that it’s still more familiar and easier to locate applications from various sites on the web. Besides, I don’t think apps like Download! or now the Ovi Store were ever supposed to be for the heavy user. This seems more of a step to get the new and unfamiliar S60 customer to start to explore what else its capable of, not supply an be-all, end-all source for applications (yet).

It’s just unfortunate that Apple has already done so well by taking that exact approach (though the Jailbreak community still exists for a reason ;)).

Streaming Video from the N96

leave a comment »

For my second challenge, I was set to stream live video from the N96. I thought finding something unique to stream would be the difficult part (which it was), but unsurprisingly, the N96 turned out to be the real challenge.

My initial intention was to use Flixwagon. I had never used any applications to stream live video before and having just read about Flixwagon being integrated into Ovi for simultaneous uploads, I thought it would be perfect. I was wrong. When installed on the N96, the application will start, allow me to change settings, but abruptly freezes and closes when I start to try streaming. To make sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I loaded Flixwagon onto the N95-3 and N85 in the house. Again, not surprisingly, the application worked perfectly. Another opportunity lost thanks to the inadequate N96.

After another hard reset, I started using Qik instead and have been able to finally stream some content correctly (though still very laggy). Streaming content I found to be completely unpractical using an EDGE connection so I was left with my only option being to stream while within a WLAN area. My goal was to interview random people at my store to ask them questions about their phones to gauge what your average consumer thinks about the current state of the market. On my first night, I wasn’t able to find a single person willing to be interviewed, though I did upload a couple introductory videos.

Today we were able to get Guitar Hero: World Tour on display with an excellent surround sound system and a 50″ Panasonic plasma HDTV. The following video is of several of my coworkers enjoying some of the last moments we’ll have in the store we called home. Even though I’ve only been there less than two years, everyone made that job feel like we were working with family with both customers and each other and it will not be easily missed. Apparently Qik doesn’t play nice with embedding directly into WordPress, so hit the links below to see Steven Kellee rock out on the microphone and the rest of the videos I’ve been streaming for the past couple days.

Despite the N96 not cutting it, I’ve been pretty impressed with both services overall. On an appropriate US 3G enabled phone, I look forward to using either of them for streaming in the future. I am still planning on uploading a bit more content in the coming days, so stick around for that.

Cumulative Review: Nokia N96

with 7 comments

It’s been 5 days since I received the Nokia N96 from WOM World and I’ve certainly put it to the test. I’ve tried my absolute hardest to use it as rigorously as I would any of my other S60 devices and not make any excuses for it. So, without further ado, grab yourself some coffee, sit back, and enjoy. If you have any questions about anything I haven’t covered, please drop me a message or leave a comment. Click on any of the pictures to be taken to my Ovi channel dedicated to Face the Task and the N96 where you’ll find a ton more pictures in all of their original resolutions.
