New N95-4 Firmware, 20.2.005!
Updating right now. Will post more with an update on what’s changed. π
Update: New firmware finished installing and I just got finished playing around with it. Some notes…
Click through to see the full list of changes.
- UDP (User Data Preservation) is NOT present, so you WILL lose all of your data after this update.
- For those using Vista, you can still update. When updating, a driver will fail and NSU will get stuck with 15 minutes remaining. Don’t touch your phone at all, kill NSU with the Task Manager, restart NSU, and it will finish in recovery mode.
- If you have applications installed on the memory card, I suggest the first thing you do is plug in your phone in Data Transfer mode and delete all system related folders. This is also a good opportunity to backup your pictures, music, and video if you’d like, but the update doesn’t affect the storage device.
- Once the update is completed and you’ve cleared your storage of any system files, reformat using *#7370#, 12345. This gets rid of any bloat files from the firmware and clears out any erroneous files that may have gotten stuck from the applications on the storage device prior to the update.
- This firmware is still hackable (finestfones.com).
- The Download! application is finally working.
- USB speeds are still unbearably slow.
- Sports Tracker is preinstalled.
- No automatic screen rotation (ASR).
- Maps is still 1.0.
- If you still have it, the navigation subscription is still working.
- Font has been changed in appearance (see below).
Here is the small font size:
Here is medium:
And here is large:
All sizes seem to reflect that of the font style of the N82, which I don’t know if I like yet. It seems to look fair and there’s more information on the screen, but I don’t know if I like it.
One thing I definitely don’t like is how the font sizes for the web browser have been condensed to just three options, leaving the small to look too small and the normal to be a bit too big.
Still waiting for any larger changes, but I think I’ll be waiting for a while.
I just flashed this upgrade and am unable to launch the web browser. Any tips for me?
Thanks!

Reformat with *#7370#. This happened to my girlfriend’s N82 after a firmware update.

[…] JohnnyBruha over at ThoughtsonS60 has updated his handset, and can’t really find any big changes, though he does note that SportsTracker is now preinstalled. If you have an N95-4 8GB NAM, you can use Nokia’s Software Update through Windows XP to do the update. JohnnyBruha also mentions that he uses NSU with Vista, which is currently not supported, though it worked ok. Be sure to read his miniguide, and try at your own risk. […]

@dimsum, the # key still does nothing. π¦
@symbianespanol, yes I have. In fact, I’m going to update this post with the differences in the font sizes.

After 1 day of use I noticed:
– mailbox access is FASTER with lot of emails (no delay now)
– overall performance seems a little bit faster (just a little)
– camera is certainly faster
– font is HORRIBLE, mainly because make the screen look smaller (I’m sorry, but the previous font was one thing I valued). The impact on the overall UI is negative from my point of view.
– battery: for sure, is not improved at least in my case. Mid day usually had full battery, today was almost empty. Maybe due to all the software re-installing… will c tomorrow
I also had a problem after installing. The phone wont register itself on the GSM network (only in 3G). I re-formatted and when choosing only GSM I get no signal. I had to register the phone MANUALLY.
Did I mention the nasty font? π

Right click on the NSU icon on your desktop and click Properties. Click the compatibility tab and set compatibility for Windows XP SP2. That should take care of it for you.
